Double binds present frequently in pre- and perinatal history, and tend to be re-enacted in relationships in everyday life, including in therapy. Double binds can also be highly seductive and challenging to navigate. Because they relate to implicit memory, they feel like they are current, happening now. Both the client and the therapist can be triggered within double bind dynamics, making them more difficult to work with.

This course aims to enhance your ability to recognise double binds and address them effectively. This involves being able to name the double bind, separate out its confusing components, and differentiate and resource in relation to them. This usually takes some practice.

During the eight sessions over four weeks, Cherionna will present material about double binds, including prenatal and birth-related double binds, and how they might become shadow and be enacted throughout life. She will guide you through explorations of your own double bind material, both historical and current. You will have an opportunity to explore this further with a partner’s support, which also gives you practice in being with and therapeutically facilitating session work when double binds are present.

We will explore more deeply than in the foundation training how these dynamics play out and how one’s relationship with them can shift in healing ways. Cherionna will give demonstrations with participants who volunteer. As well as in-class practice sessions, you will be encouraged to practice between meetings, with clients and/or with your peers in the seminar. There will be specific enquiries to keep in mind through the week. In class, there will be time for questions and discussion, including relevant supervision questions regarding double bind issues with your clients or from practice sessions during the week.

The course is for graduates of OJH only. Graduates from all training cohorts are invited to join.

This is a chance to re-connect with your peers from the training, to meet colleagues from a different cohort, and of course to deepen your understanding and skill in working with this material.
